Benzoic acid Discrovery
Benzoic acid is the simplest of the aromatic carboxylic acids, and had a crystalline structure. It was discovered in the 16th century. In the 19th century it was created using coal tar. It can be found in plants, and some animals, most of which are herbivores or omnivores. Benzoic acid is known for its antifungal nature. It is used as a part of Whitfield’s ointment, which is used to treat fungal infections such as tinea and ringworm. It can be created in a lab, and is used in industry to make many other chemicals. Benzoyl chloride and phenol as just a few of the chemicals benzoic acid is used to synthesize.
Benzoic Acid Toxicity
This chemical is also used in foods as a preservative, though it is known to be toxic liquid eggs, gum, and processed vegetable often had benzoic acid in them. Since the chemical can be toxic, there is an allowable amount which is set at 0.05 to 0.1 percent by volume. This standard is regulated by the treaty Codex Alimentarius, which dictates international food safety standards. The chemical is also used in bug sprays, cosmetics, plastics, and dyes.
Benzoic Acid Melting point
It should be noted that even though benzoic acid is a solid, it still has a melting point. The melting point of benzoic acid is 122 degrees Celsius or 252 degrees Fahrenheit. To melt it, it is best to grind it into a fine powder. At a temperature of 100 degrees Celsius, the chemical sublimates or turns from a solid straight to a gas. The sample will first “sweat” prior to liquefying. When the sample reaches the appropriate temperature, it will liquefy. Care must be taken when bringing benzoic acid to its melting point as the vapor of the molten chemical in an enclosed area can explode. There can also be dust ignition when enough of the fine grains of chemical build up. Care should be taken when handling this substance as it can be dangerous to the skin and GI and respiratory tracts. Since it is used in many products, knowledge of its melting point is important. The melting point determines which products the chemical can be used in. It is important to note that since it has such a high boiling point, it is useful in products that are heated to a high temperature in processing, such as pasteurization. Benzoic acid is important to both the commercial and industrial sectors.
